Your Inner Observer

SELF-AWARENESS & SELF-MONITORING

What It Is:

Self-awareness and self-monitoring is your ability to notice yourself in real-time - your thoughts, feelings, reactions, and behaviours as they're happening. Think of it as having a wise, kind observer sitting on your shoulder, gently pointing out patterns and helping you understand your own inner world.

It's not about judging yourself or being perfect. It's about developing the skill to step back and notice: "Oh, I'm getting frustrated right now," or "I notice I always rush through this task," or "My body feels tense when this topic comes up."

Why It Matters for Everyone:

For children, self-awareness is what helps them recognize when they're getting overwhelmed before the meltdown hits, notice when they're excited and need to channel that energy, or understand why certain situations feel hard for them.

For adults, it's what allows us to catch ourselves before we snap at our kids, recognize when we're taking work stress out on our family, colleagues or loved ones, or notice patterns in our relationships and parenting that we want to change.

Why We Need to Keep Strengthening It:

Self-awareness is the foundation for every other life skill. You can't regulate emotions you don't notice, change habits you're not aware of, or improve relationships when you don't understand your own patterns.

As we grow and face new life stages including parenting different-aged children, career changes, health challenges, aging parents, we encounter new aspects of ourselves that need our attention and understanding.

The beautiful truth?

The more self-aware you become, the more choice you have in how you respond to life. And every time you model self-awareness in saying things like "I notice I'm feeling rushed right now" or "I'm going to take a breath because I can feel myself getting frustrated"  - you're teaching the children around you that it's normal and healthy to pay attention to your inner world.

This is the skill that makes all other skills possible. When you know yourself, you can grow yourself.
